Save the Sea Turtle
Canales de Tortuguero, Costa Rica

Why this project?

The "Save the Sea-Turtle" is a non-profit project and can only stay successful if volunteers participate in the project. With your contribution you help with the protection of the sea turtle and the improvement of the living conditions of the local inhabitants. We also offer a crocodile breeding project and the "Save the Manatee of Costa Rica" project.

With our volunteer project you can be of help to 3 tremendously important projects!

For who

Anyone who is enthusiastic and open-minded is welcome at the project. On average you are with 15 others at the project. Our volunteers come from all over the world and are between the 18 and 65 years old.

Location

The project is situated almost two hours traveling from San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. The project is located at a beautiful quiet beach and right behind the house there lies, what people call, The Amazon of Costa Rica: a mangrove rainforest, rivers, canals and lagoons. They form a unique area to live in and one can only get there by boat. Among the animals that you'll certainly see are: monkeys, fish, crocodiles, 145 species of birds, iguanas, turtles and our own Labradors. You may also see dolphins, sloths, foxes and wild cats.

Working activities

You can help with the realization of the project objectives by patrolling the beaches together with the local inhabitants, support the agricultural activities (mowing, sowing, digging and harvesting) and in the off-season (November and December) prevent illegal fishing and hunting, help with constructing buildings (for example new cabañas) and creating an ideal environment for turtles to lay there eggs. Also help with the crocodile project: build and maintain the pond, find found, care for the Tilapia fish pond. Also patrolling the coast for the protection of the Manatee. Develop protection plans of the native plans and animals. You are often accompanied by the local inhabitants.

You will sleep in a nice and clean western style cabaña, with bathroom. It sleeps up to 6 persons.
