Hato Caves

The hato Caves were formed below sea level, millions of years ago.
With the Ice Age the water level dropped down and Curaçao was born. The cave covers an area of 4900 m2 and is the home to beautiful limestone formations, romantic pools, a waterfall and our famous Madonna statue. Also inside the cave is colony of the seldom seen long nose bats.

Indian Cave Drawings: These caves had a utilitarian purpose during the early days of the slave trade in Curacao, escaped slaves used them as hiding places, and lived in them for months at a time. Take a walk along a wooded trail to see the religious Indian carvings done by the Caquetios 1500 years ago. Look at the stone age tools found in the direct surrounding of this spot. These carvings have been found only in these area of the Caribbean.

As visitors to the park, you can see the "native little dinosaurs". Prehistoric iguanas were brought to the Island by Indians from the mainland of South America as food. See approximately 100 iguanas in their natural surroundings. They can grow up to 120 cm; with a weight of 2-3 kg; live up to 30 years old and are strict vegetarians. Depending if they live on rocks or in trees, iguanas are able to change to change the color of their skin to the surroundings for camouflage. From one female, as many as 30 eggs can be laid in one year. After they are born, the babies live in the trees until they are about 1 1/2 years old and are a very bright grass green color.
