Approx. itinerary:
Day 1: We depart San José
early in the morning for the Pacific Coast city of Puntarenas, where we
go by ferry across the Gulf of Nicoya to Playa Paquera. From there, we
drive 30 minutes to the Silvestre Curú National Wildlife Refuge.
Upon arrival, you will get a short briefing on sea kayaking safety. We
will paddle about an hour along the coast to our camp on Playa Quesera,
a beautiful, deserted, white sand beach backed by thick forest. Playa
Quesera will be our base camp for the duration of the trip. After a
delicious dinner, you can sleep in our comfortable tents or under the
stars in a hammock. (B,L,D)
Day 2-3: We will spend these two days
enjoying the variety of the area – paddling to Las Islas Tortugas and a
natural rock arch formed by the sea, surf kayaking, and drifting
through
a mangrove estuary inhabited by numerous species of birds and colorful
crabs. This balmy tropical paradise is perfect for relaxing and
enjoying
the clear emerald green sea and native wildlife. Evenings are for
star-gazing, crab hunting and simply enjoying conversation and the
tranquility of the forest and sea. Overnight at Playa Quesera. (B,L,D)
Day 4: We will go for our last
paddle
in the morning back to the main beach where we began. Then after lunch,
we will meet the ferry back to Puntarenas and drive to San José.

Approx. itinerary:
Day 1: After an early morning
departure from San José, we will travel east, riding thru
Braulio
Carrillo National Park. We’ll breakfast at Río Danta. Now
in the Atlantic lowlands, we travel thru banana plantations until we
reach our starting point in the Tortuguero National Park Station on the
Tortuguero River. Guides will begin the briefing to become familiarized
with your boats, gear and safety issues. Starting at the boundary of
the
National Park on the Tortuguero River will be the most unique
experience. Lunch will be along the way after an hour paddle down
the river, in the middle of the Parks’ tropical forest. After lunch,
you
will continue to meander in this lush forest with amazing flora and
fauna. Late afternoon arrival at Mawamba lodge, welcome cocktail
and dinner here tonight. We will overnight at Mawamba lodge every night.
Day 2: After a great breakfast we
will be shuttled by boat about 25 miles towards the Colorado River,
passing thru Penitencia Canal until we arrive at Samay Laguna.
Here we will board our kayaks for a three to four hour exploration of
this area. The “magical” entrance to Laguna Nueve and a brief visit to
the beach will be today’s highlight. Wonderful clean water and total
solitude will be part of the experience. Lunch will be served at the
site. Late afternoon return back to Mawamba lodge.
Day 3: Today’s paddle is designed
to
be very flexible; several options will be available to paddle from and
back to Mawamba lodge. You may want to visit Caño Palma
Biological Station, or paddle to the Tortuguero hills and take a
hike. Lunch at Mawamba lodge. Afternoon you are free to choose
from a number of tours or just plain relax around the poolside. Dinner
at Mawamba. Optional nighttime turtle viewing tour (during season).
Day 4: After breakfast, we will
paddle south away from the Tortuguero National Park. Our paddle,
towards
the town of Matina, will take us through beautiful lakes and canals.
Depending on the groups energy we can board our support boat at any
point along the way towards our destination. Return to San José.
Note: This tour can be
modified
to be a 2 or 3 day tour; the first and last days will be the same as
day
1 and day 4. For the 3-day tour, you may choose either day 2 or 3
to remain.
